Too many pictures and not enough time

I'm feeling the crunch lately of boxes of photo prints and thousands of digital images which need to be archived and scrapped. Where to begin? I've heard many scrappers say to start with the most recent and work backward. Please share your thoughts and ideas on how you've organized your photos with me.
